New spammer trend. Hijacking your good domain name (none / 0) (#9)
by spocko on Sat Mar 20, 2004 at 06:36:57 PM PDT

If you are a gripe2ed reader I'm guessing you probably own 1 or more domain name. Well guess what spammers are hijacking those domain names for there "reply to" email addresses. I'm getting juliejfdejjk@mydomainname.com as a bounce back to spam. They are using multiple variations of this. Since I use variations of the first name @mydomainname.com like gripe2ed@mydomainname.com as a way to idenitfy who is sending me mail I can't just cut off everything.

I want to do something about this, but I've been told that all I can do is lump it. Can I sue these spammer for idenitfy thieft? I'm sure I'll get the standard, "Yeah if you can find them, prove damages and have 39,000 bucks for the lawyers, go right ahead."

This sucks. And one of our resources, Icann, who could demand that we have some better email system (instead of Microsoft's pay for email proposal) just sits on its hands. I know, because I tried to give them input as an at large member and my input was ignored.
