I heard that on Saturday the MSBlast worm will flood the Windows Update site. What if the next version makes the XP and windows 2003 registration site inaccessible? Can you afford to have some of your servers stop functioning? I think these registration schemes can multiply a virus attack's disruption to the economy and the Department of Homeland Security should take a look. At one time Lotus owned the spreadsheet market and got so arogant so as to make customers jump through copy protection hoops. Who is using Lotus now? Microsoft will probably get current users to grudgingly go along for a while, but it will lose the next generation of users who usually start off with a borrowed copy of Windows (DOS in my case). In the end they are cutting their own throat.

Which poses an interesting moral dilema. If a hack were to cause the MS product activation site to continually grant keys, regardless of the requests validity, would the person(s) concerned be reviled for creating the hack, or feted for the results?

You can always phone Microsoft up if the site went down. They do have a phone# you can call to do this. I am not defending Product activation. Just pointing this out.
