SPAM is out of control!!![ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

I don't know what is going on but in the last 8 months the amount of daily spam to my email and my wife's email has quadrupled! I get 75 to 125 spam messages on Monday's and between 50 to 100 the rest of the week. It seems like Saturday nights are quiet with only 25 to 50 spam messages. If I go away for a few days I have to delete all mail. I can't even begin to invest the time it would take to go through them all so I loose real mail. Just 2 days ago an email server that I setup was some how compromised by a spammer. In 3 days time they were able to send almost 50,000 emails. It wasn't until the server ran out of disk space from all the NDR's sent to the administrators email box that it was caught. I won't be happy and /or feel like something is being done until I see some spamming turd going to jail because of this bill. I can't even let my daughter have her own PRIVATE email address because I have to control what gets sent to her. I really don't think that most political representatives use the internet anywhere near as much as say someone between the ages of 25 ~ 40. So if they don't use it then they probably don't see the problem. If I stuck a sticker on their front door asking them if they want to enlarge something would they get upset? What if it were enough stickers to cover they whole door? and I did it everyday? I have paid for and tried numerous anti spam tools and nothing that I have tried is 100%. I'm tired of spending money to prevent something I never asked for! I do like the idea of resending the spam to a bunch of politicians but I'm not about "2 wrongs to make it right" kind of thinking. Aaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!! <End of Gripe>

My yahoo account I've had since the middle of '97 is an absolute SPAM nightmare.

It's so bad that I don't even use it accept for purposes such as registering websites or products, etc.

Only a weekly basis, my "Bulk Mail" folder--Yahoo's so polite sometimes--will have 300-500 spam messages.

My cable modem email address--saving the main "master" one--I change regularly. I only use the main one for communication with family and close friends and NEVER for any commercial transaction of any sort. I suggest this strategy as it will keep at least one mail box almost spam free.

Another suggestion: whenever posting an email address on a message board or any webpage, spell it out example(at)someisp(dot)com. This will cause the address trawling progs to skip right by it. Or use some variation of this that a human can easily understand but a program can't.

As for your email server, you obviously didn't have a firewall running. Zone Alarm would have easily prevented what happened to you. Best of all the free version is as good as the Pro, just minus a few features.

Finally, if you ever decide to sign for an, ah, non-child site, I suggest you create a one-time only email address and then forget it.

I have a four year old daughter soon to join the IT world and I worry about it too. As a parent, it can be pretty freaky.
