From Napster 2.0 to RIAA knocking...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

Hmmm. Let's allow our imagination to run with this... Napster 2.0 encodes each downloaded song with a unique embedded serial number (just for accounting purposes of course). And to properly bill the client (User "A"), that ser.# is related to their account (you know, the one containing all that personal billing information). And when User_A rips the downloaded song to a CD the embedded ser# goes along for the ride, encoded in such a manner that CD players will ignore the extra data. Now being a law abiding music lover User_A doesn't copy CDs for friends, but actually loans them the CD itself. Unfortunately, User_A's nefarious Friend_B decides to duplicate the CD for their own enjoyment (an exact digital copy of course, as the OS doesn't yet know now to spot the DRM info embedded on the CD), and then later gives a copy to their Friend_C. Now Friend_C believes all music should be free (just like the sound of waves crashing on the seashore), and decides to share it on their web site. Meanwhile, the RIAA is already secretly climbing up Friend_C's nether region, and during the process of suing Friend_C for copyright infringement they use Microsoft's DRM application (along with the database info dutifully supplied by Roxio under the DMCA) to determine that the bootlegged music was actually registered to User_A, who will soon be served with a court summons to respond to the lawsuit they are now involved in...

The best thing about DRM is the user can't see electrons and bits with the naked eye. Once DRM becomes embedded in the most popular OS on Earth (supplied by a company already familiar with the justice system for other "anti-competitive" behavior), hold on to your socks folks 'cause it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Interestingly enough, after reading the License agreement, which I did not agree to, I requested the very same information you mention above from customer support, "What information on my machine will you be using?". To date, no reply. As far as I am concerned they can keep their 5 "Free" tracks until they pony up answers.
